Transparent OLED display by LG display is a technological marvel. However, many manufacturers fixated on the awe of technology itself have been failing to deliver solutions meaningful to lifestyle and living. Partial Screen is a collaborative project between Jiyoun Kim and LG Display started on the initiative to find a meaningful touchpoint between the transparent OLED technology and people’s lives. Transparent display has technological limitations in displaying blacks due to light shining through the back side. Therefore, a solution to selectively close the back side is required for transparent display to be used as a conventional TV.

Partial Screen is a 55’’ transparent LED designed with 25 precisely devised shutter blades individually motorised to control the transparency of the screen by controlling the light shining through. The shutter blades create a unique and intriguing PUI with an array of individual partitions in moving in parametric patters. Although high tech, Life Style Screen is aimed to bring familiar visual experience rooted in home and furniture.

Prtial Screen is a working concept design project, in collaboration between Jiyoun Kim Studio and LG Display finished with a functioning prototype, exploring the potential of transparent OLED technology in the lifestyle space in material and form through iterative prototyping.
